In spring 2018, SABUKO (Society for Nature Conservation) carried out monitoring birds of the Chorokhi river delta (Ajara, Georgia), South of the city of Batumi. Monitoring was carried out by Zurab Gurgenidze and Dachi Shoshitashvili, who are currently employed by SABUKO. Monitoring was carried out from 2nd of April till 12th of April of 2018.
Purpose: Identification of migrant and non-migrant species of birds and determination of their presence.
All observed species are recorded in observado.org which resulted in a total of 850 recorded sightings. A total of 104 species were found in the study area.
Since 2008 Batumi area has become highly popular among birdwatchers and nature conservationist as ‘ Eastern Black Sea route’ was proved to be a bottleneck (between the Black Sea in the West and the Western Caucasus in the East) and BRC first time hosted Autumn migration count of birds of prey. All fieldwork was carried out on foot using binoculars and telescope for identifying and counting.
